Siemens Electric Engine Aircraft - The Texas aircraft manufacturer displayed its certified Colt S-LSA for the first time at this year's AirVenture in Oshkosh. As if that wasn't enough success, the Hondo-Texas company announced that it is working closely with Siemens eAircraft to create a new generation of light sport aircraft. Siemens was recently bought by Rolls-Royce, so the new alliance could mean big things for both companies.
Colt Founding Partner Matheus Grande said, "The ability to offer the new version of our Colt LSA powered by the new Siemens eAircraft electric motor will give private owners and flight schools the option to have an aircraft that is not only fun to fly. It will be extremely friendly to the environment. Current plans call for Colt to install the Siemens SP55D electric motor, which Grande says will give the eAircraft the same performance as Rotax aircraft.

In addition to the SP55D, Siemens eAircraft will provide a system inverter and auxiliary control components. The SP55D direct drive motor produces a maximum power output of 72kW with a two-minute time limit at 3,000 rpm. New Electric Aircraft Motor From Siemens
Researchers at Siemens have developed a new prototype electric motor designed specifically for aircraft that weighs 50 kg (110 lb) and is claimed to produce around 260 kW (348 hp) at 2,500 RPM. With 5 times more torque than comparable engines, the new motor promises to be tough. Enough to lift an airplane weighing up to 1,800 kg (2 tons) from the ground.
Researchers say they have developed a light but powerful motor by analyzing all aspects of previous electric aircraft motors and incorporating the best improvements into their new prototype. In addition, the researchers used a set of computer simulation methods to create a model of the motor before construction, before using the findings to produce the lightest and strongest component set possible.
As a result, the electric propulsion system of the new aircraft achieves a weight-to-performance ratio of 5 kW per kilogram. This ratio is a special value - especially when compared to similar efficient industrial electric motors used in heavy machinery that produce less than 1 kilowatt per kilowatt, or higher efficiency electric motors for vehicles that produce about 2 kilowatts per kilogram. The four electric motors in the Solar Impulse 2 produce only 7.5 kW (10 hp), by comparison.
The new Siemens electric motor is direct driven and does not require a transmission system, spinning the propeller up to a speed of about 2,500 RPM.

"This innovation will make it possible to build hybrid electric aircraft with four or more seats," said Frank Anton, head of eAircraft at Siemens Corporate Technology, the company's central research unit. "We believe that the use of hybrid electric drives in regional aircraft with between 50 and 100 passengers is a real short-term possibility."
Siemens is involved in a number of vehicles powered by electric motors, collaborating with Volvo for fast cars and with Norland transport company for electric passenger ferries.
However, this electric motor innovation may be just the ticket for the joint venture with Diamond Aircraft, who will supply the fan motors for their DA36 E-Star 2 motor glider. Finally produced only 60 kW.
The motor, developed with the help of the German aviation research program LuFo as a project of Grob Aircraft and Siemens, is scheduled to begin flight tests before the end of 2015. Future power generation is not too far off.
